Dating back to the mid-1500's, some of the nation's oldest history is an integral part of this area.

Camden County is rich in history. It was among the first areas of Georgia to experience European colonization, by both the Spanish and English. It was one of Georgia's eight original counties, and its character and culture have for many years been free from radical changes. Now many aspects of Camden County are changing as a result of its tremendous population growth and associated need for increases in goods and services of all types.

It is more important than ever before that the history of Camden County be preserved for the benefit of present and future residents of the area. Bryan-Lang Historical Library is doing this by bringing together a comprehensive collection of this county's past and present. The Bryan-Lang Historical Library uses this collection to encourage a greater appreciation and understanding of the role that community heritage plays in the overall quality of life in the community.

As part of the historical significance of Georgia, Kingsland and St. Marys have been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Kingsland was once owned by a King: King George II of England.

Some 53 years after Georgia was granted its charter from King George, another "King", John King, acquired enough land to become the largest land and plantation owner in what is now Camden County.

Some of the historic sites in the area include:
    Orange Hall c. 1829
    - A Greek Revival historic home that visitors may tour.

The First Presbyterian Church of St. Marys c. 1808
    - Georgia's oldest church still in continuous use.

    Oak Grove Cemetery c. 1788
    - Under the old oaks laden with Spanish moss you will find the founding fathers of the area.

McIntosh Sugar Mill Tabby Ruins c. 1825
    - Among the oldest industrial sites of Georgia.
