DAY 1: 10:00am: Start your journey at the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge where teachers and educators are encouraged to utilize the refuge as a “living classroom.” Begin today’s lesson with a 90-minute boat ride through the Suwannee Canal for a guided interpretive tour where students have the opportunity to see over 400 different species of animal. The naturalist guides will share their knowledge of the swamp’s natural and cultural history, tell interesting swamp stories and identify plants and wildlife along the way. 12:00pm: Picnic lunch at Okefenokee’s own, “Camp Cornelia” 1:30pm: Tour the Okefenokee Visitor Center and experience sights and sounds of the orientation film; climb to the top of a tower to look at the animals that live in the cypress canopy; and see an underwater view of the swamp. 3:00pm: Depart the Okefenokee Swamp heading back to hotel to “regroup” before dinner. 5:30pm: Head to downtown St. Marys for a fun “Fried Fish & Hushpuppy” dinner at any of the various restaurants overlooking the St. Marys River. Optional Evening Entertainment: Pool party at the hotel! DAY 2: 9:00am: Rise and shine for another day of outdoor exploring! Crooked River State Park offers “accidental learning” by making their field trips fun and memorable! Ranger and historians are dedicated to teaching about this park and offer educational material that can be used at home or in the classroom. Enjoy the nature center, playgrounds, bird blinds, GeoCaching, hiking, and educational demonstrations. 12:00pm: Lunch at Crooked River’s picnic shelter. 1:30pm: Load up the bus, and head to St. Marys Aquatic Center for an afternoon of “Fun in the Sun!” Kids of all ages can enjoy “Splash Mountain” or just simply floating along the “Lazy River Oasis.” Lap pools and kiddie pools available to keep everyone cooled off! The Aquatic Center also has the “Snack Shack” for a mid-afternoon snack! 4:00pm: Head back to the hotel and wind down the evening with a pizza party & a movie for the last night at the hotel! |
